HVAC Refrigerant Changes

Big Changes Coming to HVAC Systems in 2025

Beginning January 1, 2025, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will require all newly manufactured residential and light commercial HVAC systems to use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 750. This move is part of a nationwide effort to reduce emissions and create a more sustainable future.

At N.E. “Bob” Waltz Plumbing & Heating, Inc., we’re here to make sure you understand what’s changing—and how it might affect your home or business.

What’s Changing?

The commonly used refrigerant R-410A (GWP 2,088) is being phased out in new equipment. In its place, HVAC systems will begin using lower-impact refrigerants, such as:

  • R-454B
  • R-32

These options offer better energy efficiency and are significantly more environmentally friendly.

What It Means for You?

Greener Systems Ahead
Starting in 2025, new HVAC systems will feature advanced technology and eco-friendly refrigerants.

No Need to Panic if You Have R-410A
If you own a system that uses R-410A, there’s no immediate need to replace it. You can continue to use and service your current system. Over time, however, R-410A may become more expensive and less readily available.
